Sedation Dentistry Q&A

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of special medications to make your dental experience less stressful. It’s sometimes referred to as sleep dentistry, which is a misleading term because most dental sedatives don’t put you to sleep (with the exception of general anesthesia).

Is sedation dentistry right for me?

For many people, a trip to the dentist can be a highly stressful experience. Whether it’s a dental phobia that developed at a young age or general discomfort in medical situations, dental anxiety can significantly impede your ability to get proper dental care.

If you have a difficult time in the dental chair, sedation dentistry can be a very useful tool in keeping your mouth healthy.

Sedation dentistry isn’t just confined to those who suffer from dental anxiety, though. It can also be a great treatment option for those who have a low threshold for pain or a particularly sensitive gag reflex.

What types of sedation dentistry do you offer?

Dr. Sigmon offers a number of safe and effective sedative options at Full Circle Dental Care. During your visit, he’ll go over all of the different options with you and help you select a solution that’s best for your particular needs and preferences.

Some of the sedatives he might recommend include:

Local anesthesia

Local anesthesia is an injection of a numbing agent directly into the area of your mouth that’s going to receive treatment. It doesn’t alter your state of consciousness at all, leaves you completely numb during your treatment, and wears off after a couple of hours. Dr. Sigmon usually applies a topical numbing gel on your injection site before administering the anesthesia in order to make the needle prick more comfortable.

Oral sedation

Oral sedation is a pill that Dr. Sigmon prescribes for you to take shortly before you come in for your visit. You usually retain consciousness on oral sedation, but it will keep you significantly relaxed and at ease during your procedure. It usually takes some time to wear off, and you’ll still be groggy and drowsy after your appointment, so you’ll need to arrange for somebody to drive you home from your visit.

Nitrous oxide

Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a colorless and odorless gas that eases anxiety and makes you more relaxed. You inhale the gas through a mask that you wear on your nose throughout the entire procedure. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off almost immediately after Dr. Sigmon stops administering it.

IV sedation

For men and women with more severe dental anxiety, IV sedation provides an effective solution to alleviating their discomfort. It’s sedation that’s delivered directly through your bloodstream through an intravenous drip, so it works very quickly and keeps you in an enhanced state of relaxation throughout your procedure. Some people even fall asleep during their treatment.
